On December 3, 1990, defendant and plaintiff executed an employment contract employing defendant as a head football coach. The contract’s original termination date was January 5, 1996. The contract provided for liquidated damages in the event of a breach in which defendant would pay the plaintiff damages in the amount equal to his net salary times the number of years remaining on his contract. Defendant’s initial gross salary was $100,000 and was increased to $135,000 by 1994. In November 1994, Louisiana State University (LSU) requested permission from plaintiff to speak with defendant regarding a possible job. On December 12, 1994, defendant resigned from his employment as head coach at Vanderbilt University. Defendant took his coaching staff with him to LSU as well.
