The Plaintiff (Wyman) met the son of the Defendant (Mills), a sailor, who was sick and poor at the time. The Plaintiff generously housed and fed and cared for the sailor until he was well again. Upon hearing of the Plaintiff’s help, the Defendant wrote a letter promising to pay the expenses for the housing and care of his son. The Defendant later changed his mind, refusing to pay, and the Plaintiff sued to enforce the promise.
