Roommate.com operated a website to help individuals find roommates. At the time, the website received approximately 40,000 visits per day and a million new postings per year. When users signed up to use the website they created a profile by answering a series of questions about their sex, sexual orientation, and familial status. There was also an “Additional Comments” section to include other information. Users could also list preferences for roommate characteristics including sex, sexual orientation, and familial status. Based on the information provided, Roommate then matched users or provided listings of available rooms meeting their criteria. Users could also search listings based on their preferred criteria.
