Facts
Beardsley was a married man. While his wife was out of town, he had an affair with a woman named Blanche Burns. They spent the weekend at his house drinking together. There was a young man who brought them liquor when they ordered it. When the young man went to the residence to see if they needed anything, Burns gave him money to purchase morphine tablets. The young man brought her the morphine, and she hid it from Beardsley.
Burns ended up taking too much morphine, but Beardsley was too intoxicated to provide assistance. He had called for an acquaintance to take Burns to the basement of the house, occupied by Mr. Skoba, as Beardsley’s wife was coming home soon. Beardsley told his Mr. Skoba to let Burns out the back way when she woke up. Mr. Skoba became concerned with Burn’s condition and called a doctor. An examination revealed she was dead.
Beardsley was convicted of manslaughter in Circuit Court for Oakland County. He appealed to the Supreme Court of Michigan.
