Lambert v. California
Citation:
355 U.S. 225, 78 S.Ct. 240, 2 L,Ed,2d 288 (1957)Facts
Lambert was charged under ยง 52.39 of the Los Angeles Municipal Code for failing to register her offense. The evidence showed she was convicted in Los Angeles for forgery, which California punishes as a felony. Lambert was arrested on suspicion of another offense, and was subsequently charged for failing to register the forgery offense.
At trial, Lambert asserted that ยง 52.39 ย violated her due process rights by not allowing her to offer proof that she had no knowledge of the requirements. The trial court denied this objection, and the jury found her guilty. She appealed, and the appellate court affirmed, holding that there was no merit to her claim that the law was unconstitutional.
