Salman v. United States
Citation:
137 S. Ct. 420 (2016).Facts
Maher Kaher was an investment banker for Citigroup. Maher had a close relationship with his older brother, Michael (Mounir) Kaher, and after he started his job with Citigroup he began to share information about his job. Michael began trading on this information and, after Maher learned of Michael’s trading activities, Maher began to assist Michael by sharing more information. Michael, without Maher’s knowledge, shared this insider information with others including Salman. Maher was married to Salman’s sister and Michael had become friends with Salman during the courtship.
At trial, Maher testified that he shared the information with his brother to appease him and to help him. Maher had even offered his brother money, but Michael wanted the information instead. Michael further testified that Salman was one of the first calls he made after learning of a major deal and that Salman knew the information was coming from Maher.
