CaseCast™ – "What you need to know"
Facts
The Robinsons purchased a Volkswagen car, and the next year they drove across the country from New York to their new home in Arizona. While driving through Oklahoma, they collided with another vehicle and suffered from injuries. The Robinsons brought a products liability lawsuit against Volkswagen and several other parties in Oklahoma state court, claiming that the car had been defectively designed. Volkswagen claimed that the Oklahoma court lacked personal jurisdiction over them, because the company was incorporated and had its business office in New York. Volkswagen sought a writ of prohibition from the Oklahoma Supreme Court to restrain the lower court from exercising jurisdiction over them, which the Oklahoma Supreme Court denied. The U.S. Supreme Court granted certiorari.
