Stanley Wilson worked for CNN from 1996 to 2014, covering major news events and receiving three Emmy awards for his journalism. Beginning in 2004, Wilson, who is African American and Latino, raised concerns about CNN’s treatment of African-American men. In 2013, he took five-week paternity leave following the birth of his twin children. Wilson alleged that CNN subsequently assigned him menial tasks and denied him promotions in favor of less experienced White candidates. In 2014, after Wilson drafted a story about Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca’s retirement, an editor identified passages similar to another news organization’s published story. CNN investigated the plagiarism allegations, placed Wilson on leave, and ultimately terminated his employment. Wilson filed suit alleging discrimination, retaliation, wrongful termination, and defamation based on CNN’s statements to prospective employers about the plagiarism.
