Williams v. Illinois
Citation:
567 U.S. 50 (2012)Facts
In February, 2000, a young woman, L.J., was abducted on a street in Chicago and raped and robbed. At a hospital, vaginal swabs were taken from her for a sexual assault kit. A police detective sent the kit to the Illinois State Police (ISP) lab. Brian Hapack, an ISP forensic scientist, confirmed the presence of semen on the swabs and ISP later sent the kit to Cellmark Diagnostics Laboratory. Some time later, Cellmark sent back a signed report with a male DNA profile that it said was produced from the semen on the swabs. Sandra Lambatos, a forensic specialist at the ISP determined that the Cellmark profile matched a profile produced by another ISP forensic analyst. Williams was tried on various charges and L.J. again identified him as the attacker. The Cellmark report was neither admitted into evidence nor shown to the factfinder.
