Washington state passed two laws regarding suicide: a law that criminalized offering assistance to another person in a suicidal act, as well as the ‘Natural Death Act,’ which stated that “withholding . . . life sustaining treatment” at the direction of a patient “shall not . . . constitute a suicide,” and that state would not “condone, authorize, or approve mercy killing.” Doctors who treated terminally ill patients, and would have assisted those patients in ending their lives through physician assisted suicide, brought a constitutional challenge to the Washington State laws.
