C.P. Craft penned a personal letter to Mrs. Iva Rippstein three days before his death. The letter was not written in contemplation of imminent death, as Craft mentioned plans to visit the Mayo Clinic later. In the letter, Craft promised to send Mrs. Rippstein $200 cash the first week of each month for five years, “provided I live that long,” and also promised payments for the remaining months of 1960. In the margin, Craft wrote that he struck out the conditional language “provided I live that long” and stated he would “bind my estate” to make the monthly payments. The writing did not specify what property would constitute the trust corpus, nor did it expressly declare that any specific portion of Craft’s assets would be held in trust for Mrs. Rippstein’s benefit.
