In 2019, the New York County District Attorney’s Office, led by Cyrus Vance, Jr., opened an investigation into potential violations of New York state law. As part of this investigation, a grand jury issued a subpoena to Mazars USA LLP, President Trump’s personal accounting firm, seeking financial records relating to the President and his businesses. President Trump filed suit in federal court seeking to block enforcement of the subpoena, arguing that a sitting President enjoys absolute immunity from state criminal processes. The President contended that allowing such subpoenas would impair his ability to execute his constitutional duties and violate the separation of powers. The District Attorney countered that the subpoena was directed at a third party for personal records unrelated to official presidential duties.
