Constitutional Law Keyed to Chemerinsky
Trump v. Mazars USA, LLP
Citation:
591 U.S. ___ (2020)Facts
In 2019, following the Democrats gaining control of the House of Representatives, three congressional committees—the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, the House Financial Services Committee, and the House Intelligence Committee—issued subpoenas to President Trump’s accounting firm, Mazars USA, LLP, and two banks, Deutsche Bank and Capital One. These subpoenas sought various financial records related to President Trump, his family, and his businesses, ostensibly as part of investigations into topics including money laundering, foreign influence in U.S. elections, and the adequacy of current financial disclosure laws. President Trump, acting in his personal capacity, sued to prevent these third parties from complying with the subpoenas, arguing that they lacked a legitimate legislative purpose and unconstitutionally targeted him.
