Jessica Gonzales’s ex-husband took their three daughters while they were playing outside the family home with no advanced arrangements. Gonzales showed the Castle Rock Police Department a copy of the temporary restraining order that had been issued to her in conjunction with her divorce proceedings that ordered her ex-husband not to molest or disturb the peace of her or of any child. Gonzales repeatedly requested that the restraining order be enforced and the children be returned to her immediately and the police officers repeatedly refused. Several hours later, Gonzales’s ex-husband arrived at the police station and opened fire with a semiautomatic handgun he had purchased earlier that evening. Police shot back, killing him. Inside the cab of his pickup truck, they found the bodies of all three daughters, whom he had already murdered.
