Ricky and Raymond Tison helped their father, Gary Tison, and another inmate, Randy Greenawalt, escape from the Arizona State Prison by smuggling guns into the prison. After the escape, the group’s car broke down in the desert, and they flagged down a passing car occupied by John Lyons, his wife, his two-year-old son, and his 15-year-old niece. The Tisons transferred their belongings to the Lyons’ car, drove the family into the desert, and watched as their father and Greenawalt shot and killed all four family members. The Tison brothers claimed they were surprised by the killings and did not intend for anyone to die, though they made no effort to help the victims and continued to flee with their father and Greenawalt.
