Professor Abraham S. Yahuda was a distinguished Hebrew scholar who, with his wife Ethel, collected a valuable library of rare books and manuscripts relating to the Bible. After his death in 1951, Ethel purchased the library from his estate and became its sole owner. In January 1953, Ethel traveled to Israel and attended a luncheon hosted by the Hebrew University, where she publicly announced she was giving the library to the university. She approved a press release stating she had made the gift and repeatedly told others she “had given” the library to the university. She refused purchase offers, explaining the library belonged to the university. Ethel began cataloguing and preparing the library for shipment to Israel, continuing this work until her death in March 1955. However, she never made actual delivery of the library, and items sent to warehouses remained in her name with no consignee specified. Her will, executed in November 1953, left the remainder of her personal estate to establish a foundation in Israel.
