Gloria Swanson, an African-American woman, applied for a home equity loan from Citibank in 2009. Despite having good credit and sufficient income, her application was denied. Swanson alleged that the denial was based on racial discrimination, pointing to an appraisal of her home that she believed was deliberately undervalued. She claimed that the Citibank employee, Andre Lanier, initially seemed positive about her application but later became evasive. When Swanson questioned the appraisal, she was told by Lanier that nothing could be done. Swanson subsequently filed a complaint alleging violations of the Fair Housing Act, Equal Credit Opportunity Act, and other claims against Citibank, Lanier, and the appraiser.
