Defendant was a bookkeeper for RMS, a property management company. He shared an office and desk with the president, and his job was to track and reconcile the company’s finances. Rent was received from tenants in the form of cash, check or money order. When cash was received, a receipt was given to the tenant, logged on a worksheet and in an accounts receivable book. The cash was then placed in a sealed envelope in the desk drawer. In August 1989, the president of RMS discovered over $3,000 was missing.
