Criminal Law Keyed to Kadish
State v. Bridges
Citation:
133 N.J. 447, 628 A.2d 270 (1993)Facts
On September 2, 1988, Bennie Eugene Bridges attended a birthday party in Roebling, New Jersey. After an argument with another guest, Andy Strickland, Bridges left the party around midnight, angrily shouting that he would return with his “boys.” Bridges drove to Trenton where he met Keith Bing and Eddie Rolle, asking them to accompany him back to the party because he expected a confrontation. On the way back, they stopped at Bing’s house where the co-defendants retrieved guns, telling Bridges they had “some stuff for the guys” and that the guns were “to intimidate” people at the party.
The trio returned to the party around 2 a.m., where Bridges began arguing again with Strickland. When Bridges said he wouldn’t leave until he “fuck(ed) somebody up,” John Raspberry interceded and agreed to fight Bridges in the street. During the fight, when Bridges was pulled off Raspberry and struck in the head, and Bing was struck in the face, both Bing and Rolle drew guns. Rolle first fired into the air, then numerous shots were fired into the crowd. Shawn Lockley was shot in the chest and died, while Paul Suszynski was injured by a bullet in the shoulder.
After the shooting, the trio fled, and Bridges took possession of the guns and hid them. Upon learning that police were looking for him and someone had died, Bridges moved the guns to another hiding place. The trio then fled to different locations – Bridges eventually to North Carolina where he was later arrested. The guns were eventually recovered through an informant.
