The defendant made and sold a product known as Kaylo between 1948 and 1958. Kaylo was a calcium silicate insulation, made with 13 to 20 percent asbestos, which was sold in pipe-covering and block forms, and intended to be used for industrial high-temperature thermal insulation. For his job with the Navy, the plaintiff would often have to saw and cut insulation, which caused him to be exposed to asbestos. The plaintiff later acquired mesothelioma. Medical experts would later testify that this exposure was the most intense of the plaintiff’s lifetime and was sufficient to have caused his mesothelioma.
