Sierra Club v. Morton
Citation:
405 U.S. 727 (1972)Facts
The Sierra Club, a membership organization with a special interest in the conservation and sound maintenance of national parks and forests, filed suit to prevent the U.S. Forest Service from approving Walt Disney Enterprises’ plan to construct a $35 million complex of motels, restaurants, swimming pools, parking lots, and other structures in the Mineral King Valley. The valley was a relatively undeveloped area of great natural beauty nestled in the Sierra Nevada Mountains adjacent to Sequoia National Park. The Sierra Club based its standing on its long-standing concern and expertise regarding the protection of natural resources, but did not allege that its members used Mineral King Valley or would be directly affected by the development. The organization sought to assert the public interest in preserving the environment rather than vindicating its own rights or the rights of its members.
