In June 1989, Warren County officials investigated a complaint about animals kept in a garage without food, water, or ventilation. They discovered 17-23 dogs in chain-link pens surrounded by inches of feces in extreme heat. Inside the Schambons’ home, they found walls lined with cat cages, overflowing litter boxes, and a decomposing dog on the kitchen floor. The house was filthy with animal feces everywhere. The four Schambon children (ages 5-13) were removed and placed in foster care due to the unsanitary conditions. While in foster care, the children, particularly the youngest boy (R.S.), exhibited behaviors suggesting abuse, including fear of bathrooms and abnormal bathing habits. The children eventually disclosed that both parents had forced them to engage in various sexual acts, including oral and anal sex. The parents were also accused of taking the children to a park where they were forced to perform sexual acts with strangers for money. The Schambons were convicted of multiple counts of sodomy, criminal abuse, and cruelty to animals, receiving 85-year sentences.
