Salman v. United States
Citation:
580 U.S. 39 (2016)Facts
Maher Kara worked as an investment banker in Citigroup’s healthcare investment banking group where he had access to highly confidential information about mergers and acquisitions. Maher shared a very close relationship with his older brother Michael, who was like a second father to him and served as best man at Maher’s wedding. Initially, Maher discussed work matters with Michael to understand scientific concepts, but eventually began sharing inside information to help and benefit his brother, expecting Michael would trade on it. Michael traded on this information and also shared it with Salman, who was Michael’s friend and Maher’s brother-in-law. Salman traded on the information with full knowledge it came from Maher and made over $1.5 million in profits. Both Maher and Michael pleaded guilty and testified against Salman at trial, where evidence established Maher disclosed information as gifts to benefit his brother.
