Sagtikos Manor, once owned by Robert David Lion Gardiner, was maintained and toured by the Sagtikos Manor Historical Society starting around 1964. Gardiner transferred the property to his charitable foundation in 1985, which later sold it to Suffolk County in 2002. In 2005, the Historical Society entered into a custodial agreement with the County to preserve the Manor. Gardiner’s will created a trust for his widow, with the remainder to go to the Foundation after her death in 2011. When the Historical Society requested an accounting of the $81 million charitable remainder, the Foundation refused, stating the Society was not a named beneficiary under the will or trust.
