Repin v. State
Citation:
198 Wash. App. 243, 392 P.3d 1174 (2017)Facts
In September 2012, Robert Repin’s Alaskan Malamute, Kaisa, was diagnosed with metastatic cancer. Repin took Kaisa to WSU’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital where, after consultation, he decided to have Kaisa euthanized to prevent suffering. Repin signed a consent form authorizing the hospital to “humanely destroy” Kaisa. Dr. Cohn-Urbach explained the procedure would involve administering a sedative followed by Euthasol to stop Kaisa’s heart. According to Repin, during the procedure, he heard that Kaisa had chewed her catheter, but Dr. Cohn-Urbach proceeded without replacing it. After the injection began, Repin claims Kaisa woke up screaming in agony, requiring him to physically restrain her while Dr. Cohn-Urbach left to get more Euthasol. Upon returning, Dr. Cohn-Urbach administered a second injection directly into Kaisa’s right leg, after which Kaisa died. The defendants disputed Repin’s account, claiming the procedure was less traumatic than described. Repin alleged severe emotional distress resulting from witnessing Kaisa’s painful death, including lack of patience, anger, headaches, and alcohol use to sleep.
