On September 11 and 13, 1980, plaintiff Remco Enterprises and defendant Alice Houston entered into two separate rental agreements with options to purchase: one for a stereo component set requiring 69 weekly payments of $12, and one for a console color television requiring 104 weekly payments of $17. Both agreements allowed defendant to terminate at any time by returning the property and obligated plaintiff to maintain the equipment. Defendant completed all payments on the stereo and acquired ownership on January 4, 1982. However, with 36 payments remaining on the television, she ceased payments on January 23, 1982. The television had a retail value of $850, but the total payments would have been $1,768. Defendant was a 20-year-old single mother with three children, had only a ninth-grade education, and relied on $320 monthly welfare payments.
