From approximately 1942 to 1977, Wanda Quisenberry’s father, Bennie Plessinger, was employed by Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock (now Huntington Ingalls Inc.) in various capacities where he was routinely exposed to asbestos. Asbestos dust adhered to his clothing, which he brought home. Wanda lived in her father’s home beginning in 1942, and from 1954 she regularly helped launder his clothes, shaking off and breathing in asbestos dust in the process. She moved out in 1969. In December 2013, Wanda was diagnosed with malignant pleural mesothelioma caused by asbestos exposure. She died from the disease in 2016. Her son, as administrator of her estate, filed a lawsuit alleging that the Shipyard knew or should have known of the dangers asbestos posed to workers’ family members but failed to exercise reasonable care by not warning workers, providing protective measures, or adhering to safety regulations.
