Lydia Hancock, John Hancock’s aunt, , leaving a will that provided:
I give and bequeath unto the Church of Christ in Brattle Street in Boston all that brick dwelling-house and land situated in Queen Street to hold the same upon [the] express condition and limitation that the minister or eldest minister of said church shall constantly reside and dwell in said house, during such time as he is minister of said church; and in case the same is not improved for this use only, I then declare this bequest to be void and of no force, and order that said house and land then [go] to my nephew, John Hancock, Esquire, and to his heirs forever. The residue of her estate was also devised to John Hancock, who survived her.
