Meritor Savings Bank v. Vinson
Citation:
477 U.S. 57 (1986)Facts
Mechelle Vinson began working at Meritor Savings Bank in 1974 as a teller-trainee under Sidney Taylor’s supervision. Over four years, she was promoted to teller, head teller, and assistant branch manager based on merit. Vinson alleged that after her initial probationary period, Taylor began sexually harassing her, including inviting her to dinner and suggesting they have sexual relations at a motel. She claimed that initially she refused but eventually acquiesced out of fear of losing her job. According to Vinson, Taylor made repeated demands for sexual favors over several years, resulting in 40-50 instances of intercourse. She further alleged that Taylor fondled her in front of other employees, followed her into the women’s restroom, exposed himself, and forcibly raped her on several occasions. Vinson testified that she never reported the harassment due to fear of Taylor. Taylor denied all allegations of sexual misconduct, claiming Vinson made the accusations in response to a business dispute. The bank denied knowledge of any harassment and had an express policy against discrimination, though it lacked specific procedures addressing sexual harassment.
