McCoy is on trial for murder and granted a public defender due to his indigent status. McCoy maintained his innocence and moved for counsel to be removed due to counsel’s insistence to concede guilt as a tactical decision, which counsel believed would result in a lesser charge. McCoy continued his disagreement with counsel, filing a motion to discharge which was dismissed as untimely. McCoy’s counsel conceded guilt, against McCoy’s wishes, which ultimately backfired and lead to a conviction on first-degree murder.
