The plaintiff, Donald C. MacPherson, purchased an automobile manufactured by the defendant, Buick Motor Company, from a retail dealer. While driving the automobile at approximately eight miles per hour, one of the wheels suddenly collapsed, causing the car to crash and injuring MacPherson. The wheel was made of defective wood, causing its spokes to crumble into fragments. Buick had purchased the wheel from another manufacturer, the Imperial Wheel Company, which had previously supplied Buick with approximately 80,000 wheels without incident. Evidence showed that Buick had failed to perform reasonable inspection that could have discovered the defect in the wheel. Buick relied on the wheel manufacturer to perform necessary tests and did not conduct its own testing.
