Ruby Lawson and her son Carl Brumlow purchased two used automobiles from Scott Reeves and Roy Limbaugh doing business as Rocket City Auto Sales. The consumers signed sales contracts and security agreements for both vehicles. One contract reflected a sale price of $1511.83 plus $63.33 sales tax, payable with a $500 down payment, two payments of $50 each, forty-seven weekly payments of $30 each, and a final payment of $1.83. Both contracts stated that the finance charge was zero and the annual percentage rate was zero percent. The consumers brought a claim alleging violations of the Truth-in-Lending Act and Regulation Z, seeking statutory damages of twice the undisclosed finance charges plus attorney fees. The trial court dismissed the complaint and refused to permit the buyers to introduce evidence showing the difference between the stated sale price and the actual value of the automobiles.
