The Louisiana legislature passed a new state law that required doctors performing abortions to have admission privileges at a state-authorized hospital within 30 miles of the abortion clinic. This law would have limited abortions to one single doctor in the state, as other doctors had not yet gained admission privileges or were outside the given range. Several abortion clinics and doctors challenged the constitutionality of the law. The law mirrored a Texas law that, while this action was pending in the lower courts, the Supreme Court struck down as unconstitutional in Whole Women’s Health v. Hellerstedt.
