Jett v. Dallas Independent School District
Citation:
491 U.S. 701 (1989)Facts
Norman Jett, a white male, was employed by the Dallas Independent School District (DISD) as a teacher, athletic director, and head football coach at South Oak Cliff High School. During Jett’s tenure, the school’s racial composition changed from predominantly white to predominantly black. In 1975, Dr. Fredrick Todd, who was black, became the principal. Jett and Todd clashed repeatedly over school policies and Jett’s handling of the football program. After a 1982 football game, tensions escalated when Jett made comments about black officials and the academic standing of South Oak athletes. In March 1983, Todd recommended Jett’s removal as athletic director and coach, citing poor leadership and planning skills. Despite Jett’s claim to Superintendent Wright that Todd’s criticism was racially motivated, Wright affirmed Todd’s recommendation. Jett was reassigned to a teaching position without coaching duties. After poor performance in his new role, Jett was further reassigned to a temporary security position. Jett filed suit, alleging racial discrimination, and subsequently resigned when offered a position as a teacher and freshman coach at another school. The jury found for Jett on all counts, but the Court of Appeals rejected the District Court’s conclusion that DISD could be held liable under § 1981 on a respondeat superior theory.
