Hollander v. World Mission Church of Washington, D.C.
Citation:
498 S.E.2d 419Facts
Carolyn Hollander (defendant) owned land beside the World Mission Church of Washington, D.C. (“the church”) (plaintiff). Hollander mistakenly believed that her property ran to a line of trees at the edge of the woods on the church’s property. Hollander and her predecessors had mowed, gardened, and maintained the strip of land up to the tree line for more than fifteen years. The church filed suit to recover the strip of land in question, alleging that Holland “unlawfully withheld” the land. Hollander responded by saying she owned the strip of land up to the tree land by adverse possession. The trial court found for the church. Hollander appealed.
