Mary Anne Hedrich was hired as a tenure-track assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in 1990. In late 1995, she applied for tenure. The tenured faculty in her department met in December 1995 to review her tenure file, which included materials related to her teaching, scholarship, and service. While the committee rated Hedrich above average in teaching and service, they gave her a below average rating for scholarly activity because she had no publications, only four unpublished manuscripts. The committee voted 7-1 to deny tenure, with only Dr. Steven Albrechtsen (a friend of Hedrich who had previously filed a sex discrimination claim against the university) voting in her favor. Hedrich appealed through various university channels, including a Faculty Grievance and Hearing Committee and eventually a Credential Review Committee, but her tenure denial was ultimately upheld. Chancellor Greenhill issued a final decision on June 28, 1996, which he reaffirmed on November 22, 1996. Hedrich filed discrimination complaints with state and federal agencies in September 1998, more than 300 days after the final decision.
