Facts
The case brought before the U.S. Supreme Court consolidated two separate cases. The first case was a class action brought by about 10,000 gasoline dealers (Plaintiffs) against the oil company Exxon Mobile (Defendants) in Florida district court, alleging that Exxon Mobile overcharged fuel. Some, but not all, of the plaintiffs met the amount in controversy requirement for diversity jurisdiction. The second case was brought by a nine-year-old and her family (Plaintiffs) against Star-Kist Foods, Inc. (Defendant) in Puerto Rico district court. The girl was injured when she sliced her finger upon on one of Star-Kist’s tuna cans, and her family joined as plaintiffs to sue Star-Kist for damages. The girl, but not her family members who joined as plaintiffs, met the amount in controversy requirement for diversity jurisdiction.
