722 S.W.2d 707 (1987)Facts
Pamela Board Daniels was appearing pro se in a family law matter before Judge Max W. Boyer in the 308th District Court of Harris County on January 22, 1985. During the proceedings, Daniels became involved in a heated argument with Judge Boyer regarding the handling of her case. The judge ordered Daniels to leave the courtroom and not return until she obtained legal counsel. When Daniels failed to leave immediately, the bailiff was ordered to escort her out. Daniels went peacefully with the bailiff until they reached the courtroom doorway, where she allegedly physically attacked the master of the court with her purse or briefcase. The bailiff then restrained Daniels, and a general disturbance erupted involving several people. The judge, who was present and seated at the bench, witnessed the disturbance. After some period of time, the judge ordered Daniels brought before him for a summary contempt proceeding. During this hearing, Daniels continued to represent herself without counsel. She was found to be in direct criminal contempt and sentenced to thirty days in jail plus thirty-three dollars in court costs.
