Both the Star Tribune and St. Paul Pioneer Press published a story on the gubernatorial election campaign. Both newspapers revealed that Plaintiff supplied information about a DFL candidate’s previous convictions, and the Star Tribune identified Plaintiff as a political associate of the Independent-Republican gubernatorial candidate and named the firm where Plaintiff was employed. It was undisputed that Plaintiff gave the newspapers’ reporters this information in exchange for the reporters’ promises that Plaintiff’s identity be kept confidential. However, the newspapers’ editors overruled the promise after they decided that revealing the source’s identity was just as important as the information. On the same day the stories were published, Plaintiff was fired.
