On May 6, 1994, Paula Corbin Jones filed a complaint in federal district court against President William Jefferson Clinton and Danny Ferguson, alleging events from May 8, 1991, when Clinton was Governor of Arkansas. Jones alleged that while working at a state conference, Ferguson brought her to Clinton’s hotel suite where Clinton made unwanted sexual advances. She further alleged workplace retaliation and subsequent defamation after Clinton became President. The complaint sought $75,000 in actual damages and $100,000 in punitive damages on four counts: two federal civil rights claims under 42 U.S.C. §§ 1983 and 1985, and two state law claims for intentional infliction of emotional distress and defamation. The alleged misconduct was unrelated to any official presidential duties and occurred before Clinton’s election to the presidency.
