On May 26, 2004, Rhode Island residents Margaret Chambers and Cassandra Ormiston traveled to Massachusetts and obtained a marriage license. A Massachusetts justice of the peace performed their marriage ceremony in Fall River, Massachusetts. The couple returned to Rhode Island where they resided together until deciding to dissolve their relationship. On October 23, 2006, Chambers filed a divorce petition in Rhode Island Family Court, and Ormiston filed an answer and counterclaim on October 27, 2006. The Family Court certified to the Rhode Island Supreme Court the question of whether it had subject matter jurisdiction to grant a divorce to a same-sex couple married in another state.
