CDI Energy Services, Inc. entered the Dickinson, North Dakota oilfield equipment market in February 2000 by hiring John Martinson and Dale Roller from a competitor, encouraging them to bring clients with them. Martinson served as district manager and Roller as sales representative, with Kent Heinle hired as a service technician in 2007. In 2007, while still employed by CDI, the three men formed West River Pumps, Inc., contacted CDI’s clients to inform them of their new business venture, and secured permission to move client equipment from CDI’s shop to West River’s location. The three men resigned from CDI on October 16, 2007, leaving CDI with no local presence in the market. CDI claimed the defendants misappropriated trade secrets including customer lists, contact information, business strategies, repair histories, and pricing information, and that CDI had made substantial investments in training and developing the business.
