Calhoun v. DeTella
Citation:
319 F.3d 936 (2003)Facts
Tyrone Calhoun, an Illinois prisoner at Stateville Correctional Center, was removed from his segregation cell and escorted to an open telephone area in the day room where guards conducted a strip search. Despite Calhoun’s pleas for privacy, guards ordered him to strip directly in front of several female guards who had no official role in conducting the search. During the search, male and female officers laughed at him, made sexual ribald comments, forced him to perform provocative acts, and pointed their sticks toward his anal area while he bent over and spread his buttocks for visual inspection. Warden George DeTella and an assistant warden observed the search but took no corrective action. Calhoun characterized the search as sexual harassment and sought psychological treatment afterward for his traumatic experience but did not receive adequate help.
