The plaintiffs owned and operated a sawmill that experienced significant irregularities in electrical supply beginning in late 1986. These problems included frequent burnouts of motors in heavy equipment and computers, unusually loud humming from transformers, and voltage surges detected by an oscilloscope. In October 1986, Tri-County attempted to address these issues by removing the existing transformers and installing new ones manufactured by Kuhlman. Despite this replacement, the plaintiffs continued to experience occasional voltage-related motor failures until April 1988, when a fire destroyed their sawmill. The fire began when a switch attached to a lumber-surfacing machine exploded, which plaintiffs contended resulted from voltage surges that had gradually destroyed the switch’s insulation. Plaintiffs alleged that the fire was caused by Tri-County’s failure to properly supply electric power and by defects in the transformers. Plaintiffs were unable to identify the manufacturer of the transformers that were in place before October 1986, though they suspected Kuhlman may have manufactured them as well.
