The plaintiffs were elite taekwondo athletes who alleged they were sexually abused by their coach, Marc Gitelman, while they were minors. The abuse allegedly occurred at competitions sanctioned by USA Taekwondo (USAT) and during training for these competitions. The plaintiffs claimed that both USAT and the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) knew or should have known about Gitelman’s sexual abuse but failed to implement safeguards to prevent it. USAT had direct control over Gitelman’s coaching credentials and the ability to ban him from the sport, while USOC had broader oversight responsibilities for Olympic sports. After the abuse was reported, Gitelman was eventually convicted of multiple felony counts and USAT banned him from coaching.
