Soon after a 10-year-old girl’s disappearance, respondence was seen carrying some clothing and a large bundle wrapped in a blanket. He placed the bundle in the front of a car, and a boy “saw two legs in it.” He then drove away and his abandoned car was found the following day. A warrant as issued for his arrest and he turned himself in. He told officers he would tell them the whole story once he saw his attorney, and they promised not to question him in the meantime. However, while in the car with him, the detective suggested that they stop to locate the body because her family wanted to give her a Christian burial. The detective knew respondent was deeply religious. As a result of these statements, respondents made statements that ultimately led to his incrimination. He was indicted for first-degree murder
