Dr. Charles Young, a psychiatrist, treated Myron Rodgers for mental health issues including bipolar disorder and schizophrenia from 2007 to 2009. In April 2009, Dr. Young discontinued Rodgers’ medication. On August 10, 2009, approximately four months after his last appointment with Dr. Young, Rodgers murdered Tonya Bowden. Prior to the murder, Rodgers had a history of violence, including assaulting his mother and threatening his brother with a knife. However, there was no evidence that Rodgers had ever threatened Tonya Bowden or that Dr. Young was aware of any specific threat to her. Pam Bowden, as administrator of her daughter’s estate, filed a wrongful death action against Dr. Young, alleging that his negligent treatment of Rodgers proximately caused Tonya’s death.
