Edgar J. Boudloche worked as a truck driver for Howard Trucking Company, transporting oil field and marine equipment. Approximately half of his deliveries involved docks, with 10-20% of these docks having no loading equipment, requiring Boudloche to perform all loading and unloading himself. Even at well-equipped docks, he was expected to assist with loading and unloading. Only 2.5-5% of his overall work time was spent loading or unloading cargo at unequipped facilities where he had to board vessels. On the day of his injury, Boudloche was loading small boats at an unequipped dock when a steel boat slipped and fell on him, causing serious injuries including a crushed pelvis.
