Mrs. Jesse E. Jones, a 25-year-old mother of a seven-month-old child, was brought to Georgetown Hospital by her husband for emergency care after losing approximately two-thirds of her blood supply from a ruptured ulcer. The hospital doctors determined that blood transfusions were immediately necessary to save her life. Both Mrs. Jones and her husband, as Jehovah’s Witnesses, refused to consent to blood transfusions based on their religious beliefs that prohibited the injection of blood into the body. The hospital, faced with the dilemma of either administering treatment against the patient’s wishes or allowing her to die, sought judicial intervention. When Judge Wright visited Mrs. Jones in her hospital room, she was barely conscious and could only murmur “against my will” when asked about the transfusion. The patient appeared to indicate that if the court ordered the transfusion, it would not be her responsibility.
