In December 1965, Weis Markets opened a supermarket in Logan Valley Plaza, a newly developed shopping center near Altoona, Pennsylvania. The supermarket employed only non-union staff. Members of the Amalgamated Food Employees Union began peacefully picketing the store, walking in the parcel pickup area and the parking lot adjacent to the store. Their signs indicated that Weis employed non-union staff receiving substandard wages and benefits. The picketing was conducted in an orderly and non-obstructive manner. Weis and Logan Valley Plaza sought and obtained an injunction from the Blair County Court of Common Pleas, prohibiting the union from picketing on the shopping center property, effectively relegating them to distant public roads surrounding the shopping center.
